I cannot see how to produce one to show monthly values as you can with the normal report. How do I do this?

I don’t understand. That article refers to a Making Tax Digital - Periodic Update not a P&L report.
I want a cash based P&L which shows data by month

The report can be accessed from Reports > All Reports > Cash based Profit & Loss Report
It can be run for a date range (e.g. the month of May 01/05/2022-31/05/2022)
Just to be clear to be able to a year month by month as I can on the other report I have to run it 12 times, once for each month and then combine them all into one report?

If you are trying to get a Cash Based report similar to the Segmented Profit and Loss Report (which has a column for each month and a total column) then yes “to run it 12 times, once for each month and then combine them all into one report”
