As a result the balance sheet is showing all the dividends ever paid, rather than just those for the financial year covered by the balance sheet.

The Balance Sheet is like a snapshot of the business at a particular date, and includes all activity up to the date, regardless of accounting year. When you drill down into a nominal code, we preset the ‘from’ date to 01/01/1900 as this would certainly cover the full period for all our users.
