File a missing VAT Return

Is it possible to submit a missing VAT return?
Since signing up for Making Tax Digital, we used Quickfile to submit 5 returns.
Unfortunately, we neglected to file the next one and continued with the period after.
HMRC say they can see the period as being ready to submit but I cannot select it in Quickfile.
Is there anything I can configure in the date settings to make it available?
Thanks

Hi @sahsah

The only way to go back to the open period would be to roll back the returns you’ve already submitted in chronological order. You would need to be careful with this as it may affect the figures when you come to re-save the already submitted returns

Hi Beth,
Many thanks for the reply.
So this would be a case of noting the VAT returns and deleting them starting with the most recent until I reach the gap, then submitting the missing one and all the deleted ones chronologically?

Hi @sahsah

Yes, this would be the way to do it. You wouldn’t be able to resubmit the deleted ones, you would just have to save these as the figures have already been sent to HMRC.

You may find that you’ve already included the data for the missing period in the following return so you would only need to submit a £0 return otherwise you would be duplicating the figures you’re reporting for that period

Hi Beth,
I’ve rolled back four returns.
Is there something extra I need to do to now to be prompted with the dates for the one which was originally missing?
If I click on create return, I can only see the last four filed ones.
Thanks

Hi @sahsah

Just double-checking, is this on the screen where you select the VAT period?

If so, this list is controlled by HMRC rather than QuickFile.

Yes, from Reports->VAT Returns->Create.
I’ve spoken to HMRC and they can see the period as awaiting a return but say they have no further control to make it appear in my software.
Thanks

Hi @sahsah If the return is in a previous year then the it won’t show using that method. You would need to go to Reports >> HMRC
click View

You can then toggle between the years to find the open period and prepare from there:

That’s done the trick.
Many thanks!
