How to count repeating journals

Hi,

I’m setting up a repeating journal.

I am not 100% sure of how many repeats I should specify for my schedule.

This is the journal:

And this is the schedule that I want the journal to follow:

I click the button:

and have the option to

I click this button and have this dialogue box:

Maybe I’m having a moment here, but I can’t decide if I should set the occurrences to 9 or 8.

I’m wondering if the occurrences mean :

“execute the first journal on 1st December and repeat 8 more times” (making 9 times in total)

Or it means

“execute this journal nine times in total where the first instance is 1st December”

I’m thinking I should put 9 in the occurrence box, but I’m not 100% sure.

Thanks

..

What you enter is the number of times the recurrences is created

Enter first journal

Enter 9 in the box = 9 recurrences

10 postings in total

Okay, thanks

So I did it wrong!

From what you say, the formula for me to remember is:

Number of occurrences = Total number of times I want the journal to run minus 1

In my example, I want the journal to run 9 times, so I should put 8 in the occurrences box, as below:

Put another way:

Number of occurrences = The number of Repeats only (ignore 1st instance)

..

I think you misunderstood. Separate your thinking a bit and it makes sense.

First you did a journal. That’s it, done with that, forget about it now.

Second, completely separately, you set up a recurring schedule. The recurring schedule is set to start next month, then repeat another 8 times, so 9 times total. The automation is happening 9 times. Put 9 in the box, it does the thing 9 times.

The same logic recurs across all of the recurring schedules in QF.

Thanks @Lurch.

I must be having a series of moments today !

This is what I’m trying to do:

I want this journal to execute on 1st December

and I want it to repeat 8 more times to give a total of 9 times, as per the following schedule:

Steve’s post made me think that if I enter 9 in the box, the journal would execute 10 times.

I want the journal to to have 9 postings in total, so I used 8 recurrences

What I’ve decided to do:

I’m going to do as you said (Lurch) and put 9 in recurrences box and hope it doesn’t post 10 times.
(Or post the same journal twice on 1st December)

Thanks

No you’re including the manual first journal in your calculations too.

I dunno, maybe it’ll just click later?

@Lurch

I hope it will click

I think the way I have been thinking about it is:

I want the first journal to post to the accounts on 1st December = 1 post
And I want that journal to repeat 8 more times = 8 repeats.

I guess what might have confused me is that when I set up the initial one, I clicked Save.
I must have thought that clicking on Save meant that this has been logged into the system.
Then, when I want to set up a repeat, I thought as above.

I’m just going to follow your advice and type in the total number of times I want the journal to post to the accounts, including the first one.

So if I put 9 in the occurrences box, there will be 9 postings (not 10).

Thanks

It’s enough to give me accumulated depression.
It’s accrual world!
