Invoicing - Invoice number already exists

We are having problems when raising invoices. We have tried to create an invoice and the system is telling us that this invoice number already exists. When we search for the invoice that has supposedly been created it does no exist. Anyone else experienced this type of problem?

If you go to the invoice management screen and click to show all deleted invoices is it appearing there?

Deleted invoices still remain on the system for audit trail purposes.
