MTD First Return Failed

I am enrolled for MTD (before Xmas) and have tried to make my first Digital tax return but it has failed twice with the following meaningless (to me) reason.

The VRN specified 180279695 was not found.

My Return is due on 7th January and so require urgent assistance.

This usually refers to one of a few things:

  • You’ve not enrolled on MTD
  • You have enrolled, but HMRC haven’t confirmed it, or haven’t waited 48 hours since the confirmation
  • You’ve linked the wrong HMRC account to your QuickFile account

One thing to check is to log in to your HMRC directly and ensure “Making Tax Digital” shows up there. If it does, try disconnecting your account from QuickFile and re-connecting it.
