My VAT account won't now connect to HMRC?

I have received the following error message

I’ve not had this problem previously and have followed the troubleshooting guide but it is still telling me I’m not authorised although HMRC says that Quickfile is my authorised application? My next VAT return will be due at the end of this month so how do I resolve this please?

Hello @ThatGirl

I can see on the account linked to your email you are seeing the “Client not Authorised” message in the Reports > HMRC screen

This message is returned from HMRC when we try and log in to your tax account behind the scenes using the details you provided.

This error usually occurs due to one of the following reasons:

  • The wrong account has been linked (e.g. a personal tax account rather than the organisation’s tax account)
  • The VAT registration number has not been correctly entered.
  • The organisation is not fully enrolled for Making Tax Digital (MTD)

You can find more information in our HMRC troubleshooting guide below
https://support.quickfile.co.uk/t/making-tax-digital-troubleshooting/37144

I would first reccomend trying removing and trying to reconnect your account in Reports > HMRC > Connect ensuring all details are correct

If it continues to fail you would need to contact HMRC directly as we have no control over the authorisation process.

Thanks, I have followed all the troubleshooting guide, have disconnected and reconnected the account (VAT number etc is all correct and this has been working absolutely fine up until receiving this error message) so I can’t see that the wrong account has been linked. It’s very frustrating!

Hi @ThatGirl

Unfortunately HMRC doesn’t tell us why the account isn’t valid, only that it isn’t (which I agree is frustrating). We basically either receive the data, or an “unauthorised” error message.

If it is the correct VAT number on your account, and the correct HMRC account is linked (and confirmed on both QuickFile and HMRC), you may need to reach out to HMRC directly to see if there are any issues on their end.

If you managed to solve the problem, please write down the solution, because I have the same issue.

Hello @Viktor_Feher

We have no control over the authorisation process, if you have confirmed the below, you would need to contact HMRC directly

Hi Viktor
I did have to contact HMRC as it would appear that I had two accounts (which I didn’t realise) and so the Gateway user ID I was using was causing the issue. They had to revert it back to my old one which solved the issue. Once through to the right person, they were very helpful.
