I paid for power user last year but found I did not use the features. It expired on 27 Dec. Today, 29 Dec I was unable to open my accounts unless I paid for the subscription. I tjhought it was optional?

it is very likely that you use more than 1000 ledger entries per year which also requires a power user subscription.

You can always check the size of your account by clicking on Account Settings and Company Settings

Thanks. Unfortunately the renewal notice did not state the number of ledger entries covered, AND, as it had expired I could not get in to check the number. However, this seems to be the solution. Thanks very much.
For future reference the account usage report is at https://<yourcompany>.quickfile.co.uk/account/usagereport
and should be accessible even if your subscription has expired - it would make sense for @QFSupport to include that link somewhere on the renewal notice page as currently the only way to navigate to it if you don’t already know the URL is via the “all settings page”… which is inaccessible if your subscription has expired.
