Please continue to attach a backup file to the emails

QuickFile sends me an email regularly with a backup file attached of my QuickFile instance. However, recently, instead of attaching the file that’s only a few hundred of KiB big, it sends a link to download the backup.

Please restore the old functionality. It is much more convenient for me if the backup is attached to the email.

Hello @bidi

Most inboxes have limitations on size they can receive.

With this I’m mind we have moved to sending links to avoid such issues.

The file size is 36KiB, at least in my case. That’s tiny, and I’ve had my account for years. The limits that email providers place are much greater than that. Gmail’s limit is 25MiB (including the message). Outlook’s limit is 20MiB. Yahoo! Mail’s limit is 25MiB.

Hello @bidi

We made the changes as some users did not receive their backups due to size, unfortunately its a situation where we can not please everyone, at least this way everyone would not have any issues obtaining their files.

Why not just make things like this an option rather than make a blanket change to an already established workflow? I am sure that this change is for the exception rather than the rule. As @bidi has stated most mail providers will allow file sizes of orders of magnitude more than the account backup size. Are you sure it is size that’s the issue and not the fact it is an attachment?

Hello @Lurch

Are you sure it is size that’s the issue and not the fact it is an attachment?

Its both, the backups can be obtained by clicking the link in the email we send you.

Fair enough. To some extent this is an issue with using email in general, but it is a pain when suppliers suddenly just change something for the sake of changing it. Yes it’s just a case of “click this instead” but the previous workflow was … do nothing. Now it is you have to do “something”, which just means more things to do which just adds more hassle for no reason. It’s little things like this that chip away at peoples sanity and send everyone’s mental health into decline.

Hi @Lurch

There’s still an option to “do nothing” - we still offer automatic uploads to your Dropbox account, if you prefer. This can be changed in your back up settings.

I already do that (and they are then automatically synced/copied/backed up elsewhere with other scripts). My real point here was just make things an option, unless the reasons you have given aren’t the real reasons then my point is don’t just make up reasons that aren’t really the reasons for doing things.

Did we receive any notifications that this was happening? I only got to know as I happen to be randomly browsing the Community.

As @Lurch mentioned, this was a “do nothing” workflow. I had an email filter set up to “mark email as read”, “skip the inbox”, “label and file”.
Therefore, I did not even realise this had changed.

What proportion of QF accounts have an issue with the backup email size?

I don’t believe there was ever a notification. The last email with backup attached had no mention things were changing, and I can’t find any other notification.
