Problem deleting Primary contact with the API

We are trying to delete some primary contacts using the API for GDPR reasons. We and getting the following error message

0: 1: Client Contact ID 2505383 cannot be deleted as it is the default login. Either delete the client as a whole or change the default login to another contact first.

We do not want to delete the client as a whole. Is there a way round this with out logging into the quickfile programme, going to the customer and clicking on the red cross next to Contact Details to remove it?
