failing to link HMRC with QF so cannot submit the saved Vat return - help!
What error are you seeing with the HMRC connection? Failures here are usually one of three things:
- you haven’t registered for MTD at HMRC at all
- you have registered recently and it’s not live at their end yet (it can take 72 hours)
- you have a failed link still sitting there in Reports -> HMRC - you must disconnect all failed or expired tax accounts, if you have an expired link still showing then your VAT submissions will not work, even if the working link is also connected at the same time
- you have more than one government gateway account (e.g. one for VAT and another for personal Self Assessment) and you’re linking the wrong one with QuickFile.
The best thing to do is start from scratch - disconnect all the links that show under Reports -> HMRC, and log out of tax.service.gov.uk, then press the connect button again and double check you’re definitely logging in with the right gateway ID.
Once you have a working connection, you will need to “roll back” the saved return and create a new one via the MTD connection (the “create” button on reports -> VAT returns).
NB I’ve just checked my account (where I know for a fact the right account is connected as I submitted a return with it last month) and it’s saying “HMRC returned a server error, this usually occurs when their service is temporarily down for maintenance”, so you may just have to try again later or another day.
Thanks Ian - hoping this is helpful - it appears the HMRC server for MTD went down at 4.30 pm and will remain so until 5.00Pm on Monday!! Will try again on Tuesday!
