I have an purchase invoice from McAfee based in Cork , Ireland. It has a IE vat registration and has charged me Vat. Could you help me how to deal with the claiming of this back as if I put it on reverse charge it makes the invoice net of vat and I have paid including vat.
You can only reclaim Irish VAT if you are yourself VAT registered in Ireland, so all you can really do at this stage is to record it in QuickFile with the Irish-VAT-inclusive price as the net and a (UK) VAT rate of 0% and take the hit on this occasion. Really you need to somehow convince the supplier before they invoice you that you are a business customer rather than a consumer, so they can invoice you without adding Irish VAT in the first place, and you then reverse charge it on your end - if this is a subscription then there might be a way you can flag this with them before your next renewal so they can invoice you ex-VAT next time.
