Up until now we have used the online VAT Return but now have to go to MTD so decided to go with Quickfile. The business has not been trading for some time but we still have to file a return even though there are no purchases or sales.
Have linked Quickfile with HMRC and tried to create a VAT return for the appropriate period, the page says “Cash Accounting”
“Date range” from xx/xx/xxxx to yy/yy/yyyy which is correct,
but the form details are all blank and greyed out and no option to Edit or Export.
I assumed the boxes would all contain zeros!
Have played around for a while but have no idea what to do next ( I assume I can’t make a purchase and a sale for £0.00?).
Hope someone can help.
Hi, same problem here, the form details are blank apart from purchases (which has been imported correctly), but the VAT due on sales is showing as 0 and the only option is to add the correct value in the ‘amendments section’. Could the tech team assist with that, please?
Hello
@GingerMalgo, I have responded to your support ticket.
@19JD60, Have you entered any transactions?
Prior to you using QuickFile how were your records stored?
Were they?
- Paper based.
- In a spreadsheet.
- In another accounting package.
The MTD scheme HMRC brought in means you will no longer be able to store paper based records and they must be stored digitally.
You can also not just enter the figures in the boxes 1-9 on the vat return as there has to be clear digital links to the information which makes up the figures (either in MTD compliant software or a spreadsheet).
The have given 2 options
- Enter all your transactions into MTD compliant software and use it to do the submission.
- Enter all your paper based transactions in a spreadsheet and use compatible bridging software to do your submission.
QuickFile offers both methods
QuickFile is free up to your first 1000 nominal postings in a rolling 12 month period then £60 + vat annually after that.
If you are coming from paper based records and have to digitise your records anyway.
Posting them directly into QuickFile would be the simplest and cheapest option as the software may most likely be free (if you do not have many transactions and are under the threshold).
Our Bridging Module is (£60+ vat annually).
You can try this out for free as you can tick the option and do your first submission free of charge.
If you prefer to use a spreadsheet and the Bridging Module here are the instructions - VAT Bridging
PLEASE NOTE you can not just have a spreadsheet containing values for boxes 1-9 as the whole point of the MTD system is that there is a clear digital link to your backing data/transactions.
@QFSteve my reading of the OP is that they legitimately have no invoices for this period and want to submit a nil return, but the system won’t let them. Is this a known bug?
@19JD60 a possible workaround could be to create a dummy invoice for £1 and then a credit note to reverse it. Then there would be some transactions in the quarter rather than none, even though their net effect is zero.
@19JD60 If @ian_roberts is correct any wish to submit a nil return you can do so by generating the return and clicking Submit Vat Return at the bottom of the form
but the form details are all blank and greyed out and no option to Edit or Export.
There is no data entered so there is nothing to edit, amend or export
Hi guys, thanks for your help. I created a dummy invoice for £1 and then a dummy purchase for £1 and was then able to see the VAT return and I submitted it! Not orthodox I know but it worked!
We were doing paper records previously. Company is no longer trading as such hence no purchases and invoices, HMRC said we couldn’t close down the operation yet until we sold remaining asset which is rather valuable. When time is right to enable the best sale price it will be sold then we can draw a line under it all.
Regards
