We need to send artwork to suppliers with the purchase order, can this be done or is there a workaround for adding attachments to purchase orders emailed to supplier.

Unfortunately this isn’t something we support at the moment. Purchase Orders are sent as PDFs themselves as there’s no supplier area on the account like there is for clients.
In this case, I would suggest perhaps manually sending the artwork and a PDF of the purchase order in an email. Or alternatively, upload the artwork to a file sharing service (such as Dropbox) and include a URL as part of the Purchase Order.
