What I think may have happened here is the image in the original email was hosted externally by the company who sent it (e.g. on their server) and just referenced it in the email. In which case, if they have moved or removed the image from their server, it breaks the reference.
When was this file created? Would you have a copy of the original email, perhaps in your sent box from when you sent it in?
