In short, the Chart of Accounts view lists my invoices with old/obsolete invoice numbers.
Here’s the correct view from the invoice page:
Here’s what Chart of Accounts shows once I click through to General Sales (4000):
These are all the same invoices but older ones are using obsolete names. (While setting things up I fiddled around with test invoices, but later adopted a better pattern and changed the invoice names.)
What I expect to see: Chart of Accounts shows the current invoice number, not the original invoice number.

I can see on your account, the old invoices have been deleted, did you copy the original invoices for the new numbering format?
Thanks for looking into this. I don’t remember exactly what I did, it was a few weeks ago. I was fiddling round a fair bit getting the hang of things.
This is the history of the bottom-most invoice in the list; I changed my mind on numbering a few times 
So, the number showing up in Chart of Accounts is the original; the number showing in the invoice list is the most recent version.
