When I enter a nominal code to a transaction teh text search works well, ie I can start typing a code or description and they appear in the drop down, it would be great if I didn’t have to clear the text box of the existing nominal first, is there a way to do this?
Would save loads of time when coding many entries

No, there is no way of doing this
Ask your web dev to use “Placeholder” instead of a default Value, two minute fix and no loss of current functionality plus beter functionality for those that use it - like me 
Yes ideally it should not require manually deletion. Looking into this.
We’ve made an update on these auto-complete boxes which should help. Please take a look and let me know if that is any better?
