Common VAT return for two accounts

I have two Quickfle accounts for the two completely different businesses I operate, each of which I operate as a sole trader. How do I submit my (combined) VAT return automatically as I normally pay this proportionately from each business account?

Hi @BGH,

I believe you will need to submit a return for each of your companies separately I am not an accountant so I may well be mistaken.

The best thing I can suggest is to speak to your/an accountant to make sure that you are reporting correctly.

I don’t think QuickFile has any support for building a single VAT return from data in more than one account. There’s the “trading styles” feature that would let you invoice as two different businesses from the same sole trader QuickFile account but this just gives you one combined P&L for both businesses which is no good if you need them separated on your tax return. You might be able to use project tags to separate them out sufficiently for the purposes of self assessment.

But if that’s still not sufficient then the only way I can see to do your VAT in an MTD-compliant way would be to save your VAT returns in the two QuickFile accounts without submitting anything to HMRC, then “download calculations” from both, produce a combined total for the nine boxes using Excel or similar, then submit the combined return from that using bridging software (which could be another QuickFile account with the bridging module enabled - question for @QFMathew: can one attach the bridging module to a QuickFile account that is also used for normal VAT accounting or would it have to be a separate third account with its own PU subscription?)

OK thanks.
Seems a bit clunky - I can’t believe I am the only person with this “problem”

OK
thanks.
