Confused by Google Calendar Reminders Settings

Could someone please clarify to me if the reminders for any of the Calendar integration are a number of days/hours before or after the event ?

e.g.

am i setting a reminder of 1 day for a purchase invoice to notify me its due to be paid or i am late in paying it etc?

Its not really clear on this, also is it possible to be able to set both of the above ?

i.e. i have a reminder set to remind me a purchase is due to be paid 3 days before, i get side tracked and forget the reminder and miss the deadline, is it possible that if a purchase/invoice with a reminder set and is still unpaid after this date to have a reminder set for the day after that its overdue?

Several of my suppliers if i miss the due dates add late payment charges, which can grow the longer left unpaid.

The reminders are set to trigger n number of minutes, hours, days etc before the event. From within QuickFile you can only set one reminder per calendar event. You can however modify the calendar entry directly in Google Calendar if you want to set multiple reminders, however Google Calendar reminders can only be set to trigger before the event not after.
