up until the latest accounts I have been reporting Jan 1st - Dec 31st. But with HMRC changng things, my year accounts being prepared are for 1-1-2023 - 5-4-2024 . do i just need to change the next end of year, in company settings, and then i can hit the end of year button?

Thats correct, The year end process will just clear down the balances on the profit and loss codes up to the specified year end date.
