Had email saying HMRC connection expiring 18th January 2021, followed link to extend connection but my status now is “failed”. Is there an HMRC delay with the process? I’m surprised my connection doesn’t stay live as it didn’t expire until next month? Many thanks.

If you hover over the “Failed” label, it should tell you why it’s failed.
The connection is live for 18 months and then HMRC deactivates it for security.
Says “client or agent not authorised”, how can that be, I was until I tried to extend my Hmrc connection.

It’s worth checking that the correct HMRC account was linked. It’s not uncommon to have several accounts (one for VAT, one for Corporation Tax, etc), and if it’s not the VAT account, it will fail.
If you’re unsure, you can disconnect and reconnect it again.
