I have seen this done for a previous company I worked for, so I know its possible.
What I would like to do is, add a link to the invoice the customer can click on and pay through paypal. Then the invoice automatically updates payment.
I have synced my paypal merchant account and have added paypal as a payment option.

In which case there should now be a “pay online” button at the top of the page where a client views their invoice.
Providing you have set up the payment option, it should appear on the invoice as a ‘Pay Online’ link, like this one:
When they click that button, they’ll see all your payment options (unless they’ve been disabled for that client). For example:
