I can't submit a new return

Hi, I rolled back a VAT return and now it shows as “Rolled Back” in my VAT Returns list. I can’t submit a new return — it’s completely stuck and not allowing me to edit or refile.

I’ve checked VAT settings, tried logging out/in, and nothing’s working.

Can someone please manually remove or reset this return so I can submit the correct one?

Thanks!

Hello @Bradley_Moore

The return is showing as “Filed” in your Reports > Vat Returns > Create screen and there is a HMRC ID on the rolled back return.

Rolling back a return in QuickFile does not affect HMRC as it is an internal/local process.

You can not re submit a filed return under MTD rules but you have to save a copy as to not impact the next return.

To do this

  • Go into Report > Vat Returns > Settings
  • Set the HMRC account to “No electronic filing” > Save
  • Go into Report > Vat Returns > Create >
  • Enter the period 1 Apr 2025 - 30 Jun 2025 > If the figures are correct > Submit (this will save a copy of the return as a placeholder)
  • Go back into Report > Vat Returns > Settings
  • Set the HMRC account back to your company > Save

… and if the figures are not correct that means you’ve changed something that affects the return values since you submitted it (e.g. you’ve added additional back-dated invoices/purchases/payments/credits). You will need to either undo those changes, then save the return, then re-create the changes, or make manual adjustments to make the newly saved return match the submitted one, then in your next return apply the same manual adjustments in reverse to bring everything back into line.

In future, if you discover any missing items or other inaccuracies after you’ve submitted a return then do not roll the return back. HMRC do not allow you to make any changes to a return you’ve already submitted through MTD, they just recommend you adjust your next return to compensate, and this is exactly what QuickFile will do if you create the missing items on their correct dates (even if those fall in a previous quarter) - they will be automatically included in the next return along with everything from that next quarter.

I still think the UI needs to do more to discourage use of the rollback feature - it’s almost never the right thing to do for MTD-submitted returns, the only valid use case I can think of is if you need to go back and submit an earlier period that you’d missed the first time around.
