when I have clicked on bell alert and invoice reminders, not all invoices show up that are unpaid, and this includes 6 month old invoices. could this be a bug. or is there a reason why this might happen?

Are you sending auto invoice reminders (credit control settings enabled)
If you are looking for a list of outstanding invoices you can check Sales > Outstanding invoices or run the debtors report.
