I am looking at Quickfile for my MTD ITSA and understand I can do the quarterly updates direct from the software. Are you also able to do the full MTD tax return via the software as well?
Hello @Donnylad1
Yes that is correct, we are currently running the 2025-2026 HMRC pilot but from April 2026 you would require a power user subscription in order to do submissions
Yes, QuickFile can handle quarterly MTD updates directly. For the full MTD ITSA submission, you’ll need a Power User subscription starting April 2026, as the pilot phase covers only limited submissions. This lets you file your complete MTD return entirely through the software.
Firstly, will I still need the Power User subscription to do the MTD ITSA submission even though I am classed as a Small business? Secondly, can I sign up through HMRC prior to the 6th April? Cos the wording on the HMRC site is misleading: “You still need to submit a Self Assessment tax return for the tax year before you start using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.”
Hello @tonybrown
Firstly, even though categorized as a SMALL business, do I still need to opt for the Power User subscription in order to do the MTD ITSA quarterly returns?
Yes you would as MTD ITSA submissions are a Power user feature (regardless of company size).
Secondly, am I able to sign up through HMRC for MTD ITSA prior to the 6th April 2026? The wording on the HMRC site is misleading, it states: “You still need to submit a Self Assessment tax return for the tax year before you start using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. ”
You can sign up with HMRC for the pilot via the link below
Even as a small business, you need the Power User subscription in QuickFile to submit MTD ITSA returns. You can sign up with HMRC for MTD ITSA before 6th April, but you must still submit a Self Assessment for the previous tax year.
