Just got a letter from HMRC saying that if the income is above 50K in the tax return for year 24-25, then I will have to use Make Tax Digital Software for year 25-26. This means I cannot do anything last minute and from April 2025, I will need to be on the ball for the quarterly submissions. Is Quickfile already set up for Make Tax Digital or is it still under developement ( thats what the HMRC website says). Are there any tutorials to get familiarized with it?
Hi @AP123
MTD for Income Tax and Self Assessment (ITSA) will be rolled out in two phases
- From April 2026, for those with qualifying income over £50,000
- From April 2027, for those with qualifying income over £30,000
The income that will be in scope for filing quarterly updates will be that derived from self employment and property income (e.g. landlords).
HMRC is running a voluntary pilot scheme that will extend up until April 2026. We are now in the final stages of development and will likely be in a position to onboard users who want to join the scheme later in the year. We have so far held off as there have been significant changes to this scheme along the way and we really wanted to focus on building a solution that will align to MTD ITSA in its final form.
As we get closer to the release date we will notify users and provide further guidance on how they can enroll with HMRC on the pilot.
If you want to get a general feel for how Periodic Updates will work, you can experiment with our beta MTD Update report in “Reports” >> “Other”.
