MTD Self Assessment - no profile for NI number

I’m attempting to set up MTD for self assessment. I was able to set up the HMRC end, and going from Reports to HMRC, I am shown a line under “Direct Connections”. It gives my name and a date connected of 5 Jan 2026. Status and VAT link are hyphens. There is a “view” link.

Clicking on “view” takes me to MTD Report Settings. There is a drop down against “HMRC Account” which defaults to “No electronic filing” but also has an entry showing my name with NI number in brackets. I can select that.

However, I am still left with a message against “Linked business” saying “No business profiles were located for this NI number”. I cannot save options.

Under “Account Settings - Management Information” I have my own details including NI number (and UTR). I don’t know anywhere else to enter the NI number.

Where can I go from here?

Hello @counterpoint

You would need to contact HMRC as we scan the connected tax account for any registered businesses, It looks like you may not be registered correctly for MTD ITSA.

I have the exact same issue. Is there maybe a time lag between registering with HMRC for MTD? or is it because I am self employed and hence not a “business”?

or should we be using our UTR tax number rather than our NI number?

I don’t understand your reason for saying that. QuickFile picked up the existence of an account at HMCE with my NI number - that appeared before I had entered my NI number into QuickFile. What is meant by “not registered correctly”? If I login to the MTD section of self assessment, it shows:

Tax year Using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Your status
2026 to 2027 Yes Voluntarily signed up

Hello @counterpoint

That may be your issue, your screenshot says tax year 2026 to 2027.

Currently we are only running the HMRC pilot for the 2025-2026 tax year.

OK. QuickFile has a drop down for selecting the MTD start date. I selected 6 April 2026. Are you saying that despite this, QuickFile is not functional for that date?

Hello @counterpoint

Yes, as this is a future period and is not open yet.

Currently MTD ITSA is only available for participants of the HMRC 2025-2026 pilot

OK, thanks. It would have been nice if the system has said as much rather than saying “No business profiles were located for this NI number”!
