MTD VAT Error 401

Tried endlessly trying to submit Vat Return. Coming up error code 401 - Missing Credentials. I have Rolledback (something I have never previously done), because Quickfile Instructed me to. I can see nothing missing from the return and am going around in circles. Help please!

This is happening to a lot of people round now, because it’s around 18 months since the first wave of people signed up for MTD. Under MTD the authorisation you granted when you first connected your HMRC tax account is only valid for 18 months so you need to go to reports -> HMRC, find your current tax account and “disconnect” it, then go through the connection process again to refresh the authorisation for another 18 months.

Hi Ian…tried this several times, and still nothing. Been ages on this now…is there anything else that needs doing other than that…tried 3 or 4 times now.

Hi @GasTech

Disconnecting and reconnecting your HMRC account is the correct way to resolve this.

If you are disconnecting it, please check that you are completely disconnecting it from your QuickFile account and using the “Disconnect” button, rather than just disabling MTD.

If you go to Reports >> HMRC >> Click on your HMRC account >> Click Disconnect

Also be careful when you re-connect that you’re connecting the right tax account if you have more than one government gateway ID (e.g. one for company taxes and a separate one for your personal self assessment). It’s best to make sure you’re completely logged out of tax.service.gov.uk before you hit the “connect” button.

Tried this over and over and still not able to submit - Is it because we have rolled back? Never rolled back before, only did so because Quickfile said to. We are now a day late trying to Submit.

Is there a contact number for anyone at Quickfile to help with this - have covered all points in the discussion, our accountant can’t understand this. Been trying to send Vat return on and off for over a week now.

Hi @GasTech,

We don’t offer telephone support i’m afraid, but if you’d like to send a private message to @QFSupport then I can take a look and make sure that all of your settings are in order

Your certain there isn’t two accounts logged under hmrc heading in quickfile? If there is you need to delete one of them. Having two even if one is disconnected can cause problems. Also make sure when setting that up you correctly pick individual or organisation.

Finally, have you tried a different Web browser?
