In the good old days when our VAT returns were fully digital, but not MTD, we got a correlation ID of 32 digits, which I presume was unique, and a confirmation of the due date and collection date, plus confirmations by email. Under MTD all we got was a non-unique correlation ID of only 6 digits, and no email confirmations. Is this the brave new world, or is something missing with MTD? It certainly is a much less useful and reassuring service for the end user.

This a change introduced with MTD. It works differently in that it won’t actually submit if it fails, whereas the old ones to a few minutes to either succeed or fail.
The receipt ID is shown if it’s successful (and accepted by HMRC), and you will still get the correlation ID on the return itself. The return will also appear in your HMRC account shortly afterwards.
