Problem with SMTP settings - Relay not permitted

I’m trying to change my settings as my invoices keep going into clients spam but it keeps coming up with this error message : Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: relay not permitted. What am I doing wrong please

Hi @kim

This could be for a number of reasons, such as incorrect mail server, incorrect username or password, or needing to tick the SSL box.

Are you able to confirm what mail provider you are trying to use? Perhaps we can offer some suggestions for the settings for you?

Hi, I tried ticking box and it came back with Server does not support secure connections.
I use outlook/Hotmail. Any help would be very grateful as its very annoying lol

Hi @kim

I’ve just done a quick search and found the following information for @outlook.com accounts:

Server name: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Port: 587
Encryption: enabled
Username: full email address
Password: your usual email password

For hotmail, the details are different:
Server name: smtp.live.com
User name: your Hotmail account
Password: your Hotmail password
Port: 25 or 465

Hope that helps.

Hi @kim

I don’t believe you will have any further issues with invoices get caught in your client’s spam filter, even if you don’t setup your own SMTP. We made some configuration changes just over 1 week ago that will mostly likely clear up those spam issues.

I would hold off another couple of weeks to see how that goes before attempting to setup your own SMTP.
