I am trying to set up a recurring purchase for broadband, but the only option I have in terms of making it recurring is from todays date, I cannot choose an older payment & make it recurring from then.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

The start date for recurring purchases can not be in the past.
For older missing entries you could Make a copy and set them to the required date
For example - Invoice dated 09/03/2024 - need 5 monthly occurrences
