Being a bit behind with my VAT Returns I tried to submit my 2023-01 & 2023-04 VAT Returns tonight.
Submission of VAT 2023-01 failed and I got an auto email from quickfile advising me to rollback and resubmit which succeeded. I assume rollback releases the locks so the transactions are swept up again and included in the next VAT submission which would explain why my figures in 2023-04 VAT Return includes both the 2023-01 & 2023-04 transactions. However, it looks like the 2023-01 submission was filed despite the Error message in Quickfile. When I look at HMRC website I see both 2023-01 and 2023-04 are filed but 2023-04 also has the 2023-01 figures included. Is this how it is supposed to work? Did the filing of 2023-01 perhaps succeed but Quickfile thought it failed?
Bit weird that HMRC site says figures correct as of 19 June 2023 when I didn’t submit them until 25 June 2023.
It would only include the 2023-01 figures along with 2023-04 if you rolled back your 2023-01 return and then submitted 2023-04 before you tried 2023-01 again. The rule is that QuickFile will include in a VAT return anything that is
dated on or after your configured “vat start date”, if any, and
dated on or before the last day of the period you’re submitting, and
not already locked by another “submitted” or “saved” return
Yes that’s how I understood it to work which is why I was baffled by what happened because I was pretty sure I simply followed the email instruction to rollback and resubmit. Then I got the success email.
Anyway, if that’s the only logical explanation then I guess I must have messed up somehow. What remains now is how do I rectify the situation? I suppose I just doctor the next Return (when due) by subtracting the figures which were seemingly submitted twice. I’m assuming the figures in boxes can be doctored and are not locked by the software as the boxes are auto populated from the transactions recorded.
