SMTP 5.5.1 authentication required Zoho mail

I’ve had a good search but can only find Gmail solutions for this, which aren’t helping so hoping someone can help.

I’m trying to set up SMTP settings. I use Zoho mail for my mail provider but it’s with a personalised domain which then points to Zoho using a name server DNS record. I’ve tried entering the different SMTP info supplied by Zoho but I keep getting a ‘5.5.1 authentication required’ error message:

It looks like there was a problem reaching your SMTP service
The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.5.1 Authentication Required.

I’ve double checked the settings and all seems as provided. And I’ve tried some alternatives too, but still no joy.

Any ideas?

Looking at the Zoho help page for SMTP, you definitely want the port 587 version rather than 465. Beyond that the only thing I notice is this sentence:

If you have 2fa then QuickFile will definitely require an app-specific password.

Thanks Ian. I’ve used the 587 port and did try the app-specific password but I was unconvinced with the process on Zoho’s side of things and sure enough, it returned the same error message. I’ll try again today and see if anything changes.

Hi @HannahTRL

Please let us know how you get on.

If you require any further assistance with this, we’ll try and help further. As @ian_roberts mentioned, it should be just the case of using an app password (which is similar to what the Gmail guide goes through).

Thanks guys, I tried again with various things. An alternative Zoho server address I found, as well as a new app password worked.
