SMTP email SSL port 465 not working?

I have configured SMTP and it’s working without SSL being enabled but when attempting to use SSL with port 465 this doesn’t appear to work?

I have tested elswhere and even checked with telnet and 465 is definitely used here.

You can use SSL on port 25 or 587, I see many accounts setup this way and working fine. I think the transport mechanism is different for port 465 and not supported by our application. Port 465 was originally setup for SMTPS which has now been largely depreciated in favour of STARTTLS over port 587 or 25.
