Timing of Recurring Journal

I’ve setup a recurring journal for the end of each month. If I hover over the calendar icon, it says “Next journal due on 31/03/2023” (today at time of posting)

If I then click on the journal that contains the schedule, it says “The next journal will be automatically created today”

I’ve seen a number of threads related to recurring invoices and possible delays on 1st of the month due to the quantity. Is there also a lag on journals on the last day of the month? I don’t think anything would be sent out so it should just be processing. Or is the last day of a common financial year also a day when the weight of tasks slows things down?

What time should we normally expect recurring journals to happen, and what is the latest we can expect if there is a high load of other tasks?

Hi @martinprice

I’m waiting on confirmation on this from our development team, but I believe it actually depends on the journal itself.

I’ve had a look at your account and there is one journal there I can see waiting to be created. I believe this should be created within the next few minutes

Hi @QFMathew - thanks for your reply. I had a look and the original journal and the recurring schedule were created at 11:31 and 11:37 GMT respectively. If that dictated the time of all subsequent ones using the schedule, I would have expected it by now (13:10 BST / 12:10 GMT).

EDIT: went in at 14:06 BST.

Any insight into why that time?

Hello @martinprice

I just checked and the entry is showing correctly now.

From 8am recurring journals are run on all accounts in batches of 300 every 10 minutes to spread the workload across the day so performance is not affected. Last day of the month and first day of the month tend to take a bit longer due to larger volumes.

While there are arguments for not sending out recurring invoices during the night, there should be virtually no reason why recurring journals couldn’t be done during the night hours, with no impact on any users. Is this something that could be considered?

Hello @martinprice

While we will consider all requests, we will never meet everyone’s requirements.

Most of the time, all recurring journals are usually processed by 10.30am (when I looked back historically) with spikes on the first and last days of the month due to volume.

The system performance over the same period I looked at was steady all the way through.
