VAT - HMRC Server Error

I am receiving the following error persistently (over a week) when selecting Create New VAT Return : HMRC returned a server error, this usually occurs when their service is temporarily down for maintenance.. I have filed MTD returns successfully previously but the business has recently changed from a partnership to sole trader which may be relevant - all necessary forms submitted to HMRC.
HMRC VAT Webchat confirmed that there were no issues at their end and put me onto the Digital Customer Support Team, who report they are investigating the problem. Filing deadline is today. Can you do anything to help please?

Hi @Susan_Appleton

A server error would be on HMRC’s side of things rather than QuickFile. It can sometimes be fixed with something as simple as disconnecting your HMRC and QuickFile accounts, and reconnecting them again.

If they have confirmed they are investigating the issue, it does suggest there is a genuine issue on their side. In which case, HMRC should be able to advise on where you stand in regard to late submissions.

Thank you Mathew, helpful to have confirmation that the issue is likely to be on HMRC’s side.
I’ve asked HMRC if I can file a non-MTD return, awaiting a response. Will try to remember to post back here what the outcome is as it may be useful for other users.

There are often issues with HMRC services on and just before filing deadlines simply because there are many times more people trying to use the service that day than any other. I’m afraid the best defence is to get your submissions in earlier than the last possible day or two (not least so that if there are problems then you still have time to correct them before they impose penalties). But I appreciate that doesn’t help for this particular quarter.
