On my Vat certificate I have
VAT return period end date :31 May 2017
Frequency of returns: Quarterly in August, November & February
I am a bit confused. Could you tell me what period should I set ip in settings?

that will be Feb, May, Aug, Nov with vat start date as date on your vat certificate

It is confusing “Month Commencing”. How can be the same May as commencing and period end. Regards
From the dropbox options, you should select the month commencing. Going by your VAT quarters above, you should select Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec
These would match your VAT periods:
Mar - May
Jun - Aug
Sept - Nov
Dec - Feb
