Vat report over two dates is inaccurate

I have created a vat report between two dates to cover a year. the report is inaccurate.
eg report created 1/12/2017 to 30/11/2018 produces big figures. If I download this report for excel it shows several entries in the year 2016, why is this when I specifically ask for dates 2017 to 2018?

It sounds like it may be down to your VAT start date causing this.

Invoices and purchases will be automatically imported into the first VAT return even if they were entered outside of the period you are filing. You can override this by manually setting a ‘Start Date’ in the VAT Settings area. If you are filing your first return for 1st January to 31st March then setting the start date to 1st January will ensure no earlier items get pulled forward into the return.

I have set the Vat start date to the date I require and it makes no difference. it still brings in data from 2 years ago

I think its working now. I had TBA listed for the VAT number in VAT settings, even though the correct VAT number was in the account settings it wasnt showing in the VAT settings page
