VAT submission with old purchases

Hello,

My company is a few years old but only got VAT registered on the 24 Feb 2014.

I’m due to fill my VAT application for the period 24 Feb 2014 to 30 Apr 2014.
However I entered on quickfile a few items bought for the company during the past 3 years that I want to get the VAT back

I left “Vat Filing Start Date” blank so to get all purchases accounted for, but when I submit my VAT I get an error on the dates.

To summarise:
How can I submit my 3 years worth of VAT and be in the period 24 Feb 2014 to 30 Apr 2014?

Regards,
Alex

Please make sure you qualify criteria to claim vat back on goods bought before registration and manually work out how much vat should be as leaving vat registered date open or far back in past would cause problem. If you you have not done vat entries in past system wont pick up automatically.

You can reclaim vat through manual adjustment in vat return it self

Thank you for your reply.

I checked that I qualify to claim vat back on good bought before registration and it looks all good. This is my first application for VAT.

Because quickfile does not allow me to fill a VAT return if the start date is not the first day of a month, I will have to fill my first return on HMRC website directly.

After doing so, how can I record it in Quickfile?

Regards,
Alex

Ordinarily you will be able to file your first return with the 1st of the month you registered to the end of the period, even if this pre-dates your registration for VAT. Unfortunately the HMRC system just returns an “invalid date” message, without actually stating what dates it expects, so with 1st returns there is some guess work

If you log into the Gov Gateway it will give you some clue as to what dates to input on QF.

Also I would recommend you just download and check the backing report when submitting your first return as it will automatically bring forward any items beyond the VAT start date if this is before the start date of the first quarter.

Hi,

It seemed to have worked this time, HMRC is processing the request.

HMRC requested:
Date from: 24 Feb 2014
Date to: 30 Apr 2014

So I left “Vat Filing Start Date” in settings blank to get all purchases accounted for, and modified the date range on the VAT return to go from 01/02/14 to 30/04/2014.
