I’ve just ried preparing our latest VAT return. I’ve previously used QuickFile for a couple of years for VAT returns without difficulty. This time, I’ve been unable to enter figures directly into the numbered boxes but have to use the Edit option to enter figures as adjustments. When I try to submit the return, I get the following error message:
Error: Under the Making Tax Digital rules VAT returns should be supported by accounting records. This VAT return appears to consist only of adjustments and cannot be submitted to HMRC. If you prefer to submit your return from an Excel document then please use the VAT bridging module instead.
I haven’t had this before, and I haven’t used a bridging module before. What do I need to do to submit my return?
This has only been enforced on QuickFile recently due to HMRC decommissioning the XML submission (older method).
With MTD and adjustment only return is not permitted as you are required to have digital back up for your return. As the error mentions you will need to use the bridging module to upload your return. If you follow the link this will give you more information on the bridging returns.
The key thing is that to comply with MTD you can’t simply create a spreadsheet by hand and upload that, you must keep your original records in some sort of software and there must be an unbroken chain of digital links from the source records right through to the VAT return. It’s OK to
export your sales and purchases from your records software into a spreadsheet
write formulas in that spreadsheet to add up the various totals and calculate the VAT return boxes without manual entry
upload that spreadsheet to the QuickFile bridging module
but it’s not OK to have any manual data entry or manual copy and paste of any of the individual numbers or totals anywhere in the chain.
