As @FolkLondon points out, I believe the project tag feature would be the best way to approach this. This allows you to allocate upto 5 project tags to an invoice or estimate, and produce profit and loss reports based on those tags. And I’m pleased to say, it’s a growing feature too.

Previously you had to create your document first before applying your project tags. Now you can simply enter your tags inline when you create your invoice, estimate, purchase or purchase order.

Filter invoices and purchases with no project tags
This was a popular request on our forum. For some time it has been possible to show project tags within your main invoice / purchase list. Now you can pop open the advanced search and filter all invoices / purchases that are either “untagged” or “tagged”.
