VAT Return rolled back - two VAT Returns now showing

Continuing the discussion from Undo Rolled back vat Return:

I followed @Paul_Courtier instructions for reversing a “roll-back” of a VAT Return but did not get the result that I was expecting!

There two menu options to view VAT Returns;

1. Reports > HMRC > View connected account > VAT Obligations

VAT Return #001 status shown as “Filed”

2. Reports > VAT Returns > Tick "Show rolledback VAT returns"

VAT Return #001 was submitted via MTD but “rolled-back” today.

RESULT The VAT Return that was submitted to HMRC earlier this month is showing as ROLLEDBACK whilst an additional VAT Return created today is showing as SAVED.

How to fix having two VAT Returns for the same period showing on the account? The SAVED return has stopped carrying forward the transactions in to the next VAT Return (May-June-July), but the original VAT Return that HMRC have received was the actual return submitted.

I would prefer to see the ROLLEDBACK unrolled and the SAVED expunged.

Your assistance with this first VAT Return filed with HMRC via MTD would be helpful :butterfly:

Hello @alan_mcbrien

When you rollback a return all it does us unflag all the transactions in that return as unflagged for vat

Meaning they can be picked up by the next return.

Both return entries will remain for audit purposes.(rolled back returns can be hidden from view buy unchecking “Show rollback VAT returns” in the top right of the screen)

Did you rollback in error?
Do both of the returns in the last screenshot have the same value due/owed?
(If necessary you can make an adjustment on the next return (if the error is under 10k) or by submitting a VAT652 form)

How to correct VAT errors and make adjustments or claims (VAT Notice 700/45)

Hi @QFSteve,

Both of the returns screenshotted have the same value due/owed. The rollback was done in an attempt to correct the pre-VAT sales invoice payments being included as part of the first MTD VAT Return. Rather than making an adjustment for the the pre-VAT sales invoice payments I wanted to remove those payments from the VAT Return as they created an unusual “Balance Sheet” entry…

Cash based/Flat Rate Scheme creates a VAT Sales liability for invoices that did not have VAT charged that then creates an unusual journal entry under “(2204) Manual Adjustments” that shows on the balance sheet “Current Liabilities” that is better accounted for in a more appropriate way.

As you suggested in your earlier reply to this “This type of query should always be checked with your accountant for professional advice.” but I suggest that the simpler method would to include a “tick box” to exclude payments that are pre-VAT registration.

As there are automatic 15 minute backups done; possibly can the account be rolled back to before 31/05/2022 11:00 ?? As this is before the VAT Return was rolled back yesterday.

Hello @alan_mcbrien

Once you have submitted a vat return, it will always remain on your account.

If this return is rolled back, the rollback return will always remain on your account for audit purposes.

The return can be re run in QuickFile for the same period to include/exclude transactions but can not be submitted.

An adjustment would need to be made on the next return to account for the difference (if the difference is under 10k).

In your case you need to consult your accountant to seek advice of what to do with the “journal entry under “(2204) Manual Adjustments” that shows on the balance sheet “Current Liabilities””

We take internal backups for disaster recovery etc, we do not restore accounts back to earlier points in time.
Backups taken on the system will give you copies of transactions on your accounts in a CSV format
