HMRC Tax Accounts - MTD Returns

Please Note: You must first independently enrol your business for Making Tax Digital before proceeding with these steps. You can enrol for MTD within your HMRC Business Tax Account.

With the roll-out of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) Service, there’s now a new way to connect your QuickFile account to HMRC so that you can file your MTD tax information.

  1. In your VAT settings make sure that both Enable online filing and Use MTD features are ticked. (You can do this before or after you have linked your HMRC account)

  2. From the top menu, select “Reports” followed by “HMRC”.

  3. You should then see a button “Connect a new Tax Account”, go ahead and click this button:

  4. You will be prompted to add a name for this account and to specify if the account belongs to an organisation or individual. For VAT filings you will need to select “Organisation account”.

  5. Click the “Continue” button and you will be directed to the HMRC authentication page.

  6. Log into the Tax Account you would like to link to your QuickFile account and confirm the link on the HMRC authentication pages. This account should have access to the relevant HMRC services you wish to use in QuickFile, for example, if you’re using QuickFile for MTD VAT returns, your HMRC account needs to be able to access this service.

  7. You will then be redirected back to the HMRC Connect page in QuickFile and your Tax Account should now be visible.

Test your Tax Account link is working

Once you’ve linked your Tax Account you should see it on the HMRC Connect screen. Now is a good time to test that the account link is working. Simply click on the corresponding “view” link for your Tax Account.

Now click on the “VAT Obligations” link. You should then see a live view of your open and completed VAT periods.

If you get an error here it means that we have been unable to retrieve information from your Tax Account. This can be due to one of the following reasons.

  • You have not yet enrolled for MTD within your HMRC Tax Account
  • The VAT number saved in QuickFile is incorrect
  • You have connected the wrong HMRC Tax Account

Linking your Tax Account to your VAT Profile

Please note: Once you have enrolled on the HMRC MTD for VAT, you will no longer be able to file your returns using the old method.

In your VAT Settings area ensure the boxes “Enable Online Filing” and “Use MTD Features” are checked and the correct HMRC account is linked below in the drop down.

Once you have done this you can proceed to file a VAT return. If the MTD features are correctly setup you should see a box prompting you to select the appropriate filing period when you go to Reports > HMRC

You can then prepare, preview and file your return.
